The Old Rock

How would one crack an old rock impervious to constant beating?

This is the great dilemma facing Sen. Miriam Santiago against “Tanda”, the tag attributed to Juan Ponce Enrile since the outbreak of the well-maligned Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). The feisty Senator did everything she could, but apparently, her arc enemy’s indomitable spiritual constitution is so well intact that no amount of degradable dirt would break him down.

For every speeche the feisty Senator delivered – and she makes a lot these days as she is the most sought after public speaker – she torpedoed “Tanda” of her repeated diatribes. However, it seems that she hasn’t made a dent. She’s being ignored, not of what she’s saying, just that among the personalities of her diatribes none dared to rebut her. They are all scared. Don’t get into form with her. One wouldn’t last.

One time “Tanda” blew his top, and the two engaged in the battle of privilege speeches. They threw each others their dirty linen in the August Chamber of the Senate. Sen. Enrile fidgety on his seat, felt uneasy while Sen. Miriam Santiago lashed him out, played a game with his tablet instead. Of course, Enrile backed down. He said, he wouldn’t make a rejoinder.

At the Senate hearing on the PDAF controversy, Sen. Miriam Santiago warned, cajoled and castigated Janet Napoles, the alleged PDAF’s mastermind, when she took the stand. Sen. Santiago implored Ms. Napoles to snitch Enrile as the mastermind, as she, with her unsophisticated background is incapable of such a behemoth scheme. If she shifted the onus to Enrile, she’s assured of her safety from liquidation, and at the same time exculpates herself of her role in the PDAF’s scams. To this, Janet Napoles just nodded her head, opted to wait instead for the prevailing wind altered its course.

When Ruby Tuazon, the first conduit witness who described how she couriered kickbacks money from Napoles to Jinggoy Estrada and Enrile, Sen. Santiago grilled Tuazon if she handed the money directly to Enrile. Ruby Tuazon denied that. She said she coursed Enrile’s kickbacks through Atty. Gigi Reyes, his Chief of Staff. She further said that on one of her delivery to Gigi Reyes, Enrile joined them for a coffee. Sen. Santiago blows this up to the media saying Enrile’s presence was authorizing Gigi Reyes to receive the kickback on his behalf.

After Winnie Monsod interviewed Mrs. Cristina Ponce Enrile in TV Program “Bawal ang Pasaway” in which Mrs. Enrile revealed of Sen. Enrile’s 38 women, Sen. Santiago beat the crap out of Enrile, lambasting him as a sex crazed pedophile and encourage Atty. Gigi Reyes to come out, as she is being used by her former paramour as the fall guy.

Enrile or “Tanda” is exceptional for his survival instinct, toughness, and imperviousness. Compare him with Gen. Angelo Reyes, who, just on his Senate hearing alone committed suicide for his alleged receipt of 50 million as “pabaon” (send-off money) for his retirement, that speaks well how solid the old rock Enrile is.

However, the old rock would crack soon. Not with the scathing verbiage of Sen. Miriam Santiago but with the arrest order of the Ombudsman Conchita Caprio Morales, which will come out soon.

My writing showed some progress, not as much in pecuniary form, but in psychic income. My writing started to have fruition when my opinion pieces, essays, short stories, ghost-writing graced in different publications. With the advent of ¨Blogs¨ of today’s technology, my writing made a leapfrog.
